The eBay Digital Service Efficiency (DSE) dashboard helps eBay to see the full cost, performance and environmental impact of customer buy and sell transactions, giving eBay a holistic way to balance and tune its technical infrastructure.

Much like a dashboard in a car, DSE offers a straightforward approach to measuring the overall performance of the eBay engine - its technical infrastructure, across four key business priorities: performance, cost, environmental impact, and revenue.

Our intent by releasing DSE, and our corresponding data, is to establish a baseline for 2012 and then set productivity and efficiency goals for 2013. Our goals for the year ahead are as follows:

  • Increase transactions per kWh by 10% year over year
  • Reduce cost per transaction by 10% year over year
  • Reduce carbon per transaction by 10% year over year

We’ll be updating and reporting out on all the numbers in the dashboard and our progress on our improvement goals each quarter.
